Using Essential Oils Safely

The Basics of Using Essential Oils Safely

Consult your health care provider and a qualified aromatherapist before using essential oils (EO)

Buy high quality EOs

Always dilute EOs in a carrier oil (CO), never apply them “neat”

Test EOs on a small patch of skin first (inside of arm above elbow)

Do not apply EOs around eyes, around nose, in ears, in mouth (except safe dilution rates in tooth cleaners) or in other body orifices

Use a CO, not water, to remove EOs from eyes and skin

Do not apply photosensitizing EOs to the skin in dilutions over the maximum safe amount (see below) if skin will be exposed to UV light within 12 hours minimum

Do not ingest EOs

Contact the Poison Control Center if EO is accidentally swallowed

Store undiluted EOs and products with diluted EOs in ultraviolet glass cosmetic bottles or glass rollers like Infinity Jars to protect the EOs’ aromatic and therapeutic properties and prevent the EOs’ ability to break down plastic bottles

Store EOs and COs in a cool, dry, dark place (when stored properly, the shelf-life of most EOs is approximately 2 years from opening except citrus EOs, which is approximately 1 year from opening)

Keep EOs away from open flame/ignition sources because they can be highly flammable

Keep EOs and diffusers out of reach of children

Diffusing Essential Oils

Use an ultrasonic essential oil diffuser in a well ventilated room and follow the manufacturer’s directions. Diffuse for no longer than 60 minutes at a time with at least 60 minute breaks in between diffusing.

Using Essential Oils in the Bath

Combine a maximum of 10 drops of EO with 1 tbs of shampoo or body wash. Run bath and, once full, add diluted EO then mix into bath by hand.
